Tips for this Valentine's Day from the Bra Whisperer

With Valentine's Day a little over two weeks away, we went to Susan Nethero, the Bra Whisperer herself (featured on Oprah, The Today Show, The Tyra Banks Show, and founder of Intimacy Boutique), and asked for some tips for creating an intimate occasion.

OCG: What are the current lingerie trends people can expect for Valentine's Day and going into the spring season?
SN: The colors this year are exquisite! Lots of purple, red, fuchsia, electric blue and turquoise. This was evident on the red carpet during the golden globes.  White is also being considered as a color trend in bras.

These same colors also hold true in sleepwear. We are seeing that bust support is still the order of the day, with silhouettes that fit a little looser around the middle.

For gifts later in the spring season, the "it" bra colors are more mutely toned taupes, creams, and peaches.

OCG: Any hot new brands/bras and personal current favorites to look out for ?
-Aubade’s Etreinte Polynesienne bra and panty set really sets the mood for the perfect romantic getaway:

-Chantelle’s new Africa tie die bra in gorgeous hues of navy and electric blue is just stunning for valentine’s day and into the spring season:

-Love Love Curves Eva  is a darling chemise with a built in bust perfect for girls who need a little extra va-va-voom up top.
-Else Bra Sized chemise, in contrast, is the ideal silhouette for the fuller bust as the bra sized silhouette has a gorgeous and flattering fit for the fuller busted gal.
-And the Cosabella satin & lace because it’s just so sexy… provides the perfect baby doll silhouette!
OCG: Any fun/new accessories?
SN: We have a new really cute hanky panky called ‘etched rose’ that just arrived. It’s adorable- light pink a soft gray etched rose pattern:

OCG: Can you give us four tips for male Valentine's Day shoppers?
1) Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Men can get a little freaked out and embarrassed, but most men will find that our staff is extremely professional and very eager to help him choose the perfect gift.
2) Take a peek in her lingerie drawer when she isn’t looking. Pay attention to colors she’s drawn to, as well as sizes and fabrics so that you have a good idea of what she likes.
3) Pick something out that you like too! After all, even if it’s a little out of her comfort zone, she is going to want to look attractive for you.
4) Lingerie pairs well with soft candle light, romantic music, maybe a bubble bath and some champagne? Take the time to create a romantic space for your honey! Women can feel insecure about their bodies, and setting the mood can really help to uplift her confidence!

Intimacy also tries to make it extremely easy for male shoppers whose wives/girlfriends/friends have been in before.  Each customer has a profile in our customer system, where they can keep track of what styles and sizes have been purchased.  This profile system allows men to be able to come in and look up their significant other's bra track record for tips, ideas, and even see if they have anything on their wish list!

Visit Intimacy's website and Facebook for more tips and secrets about how the right bra can make you look and feel your sexiest!

Gifts That Keep Giving

What do you do when you want to help those less fortunate than you, but you don't have the spare time to volunteer or the extra cash to donate? At Christmas time, the need for help is as present as ever, but time is scarce and, after we check off all the names on our gift lists, so is money. Have you thought about buying gifts with purpose? These are gifts that are not only great gifts, but they help others.

This month's issue of The OC Gazette includes a gift guide filled with gifts that keep on giving. We found a host of local nonprofits who offer some really cool products- from t-shirts to beanies to bracelets- and listed a handful of them in this guide. When you buy from these organizations, all (or a large portion of) the proceeds go to help others.

One such organization that we included is International Sanctuary, an Irvine based nonprofit that offers beautiful and unique jewelry made by young women in India who were rescued from sex trafficking The girls are paid 100% above fair trade wage.

Here is a sneak peek at some of the jewelry iSanctuary offers:

Beautiful, no? All these items are $20 or less. !!

You can browse these items and more by visiting International Sanctuary's online shop or by visiting their store in Irvine at:

Winter Cactus & Succulent Sale

Any green thumbed readers out there? Big news!  The Orange County Cactus and Succulent Society is hosting its annual Winter Cactus and Succulent Sale this weekend at the Fullerton Arboretum! From 10 am to 4pm starting today through Sunday, you can visit the Arboretum and find dozens of vendors with thousands of various cactus and succulent plants on sale. This is the largest sale of its kind in the region and it's only held twice a year. Don't wait till July- go today! Parking and entrance are free, but visitors are encouraged to make a voluntary contribution at the Arboretum entrance.

Even if you don't have much of a green thumb, succulents make a fabulous introduction to gardening as they require very little water and attention. In other words: this is a great intro to gardening for anyone! Cacti and succulents also make great gifts, seeing as how they are growing in popularity and, arguably, in chic-ness.

Visit the Fullerton Arboretum's website for further info.

This Weekend in OC

There used to be a cartoon called The Weekenders about a rag tag group of kids who I can only assume, since I never actually saw the show, lived for the weekend (their theme song ended with the line, "I'm living for the weekend"). It may only be Wednesday today, but it's always nice to have something to look forward to (i.e., the weekend). For us Orange Countians, there's always something fun to do on the weekend.

Take this weekend, for example; you have a whole slew of fun events to choose from:

Tomorrow, hit the 1st Thursday Artwalk in Laguna Beach, where you can check out galleries for free, see cool local artist demonstrations, live performances, etc:

Beginning Friday, the Laguna Beach Hunger Bowl, which includes music, art, a silent auction, and food, all to raise awareness about Hunger and Homelessness. Your ticket gets you 6 soup tastes in a handmade ceramic bowl that's yours to take home, a soda, and a dessert:

Also on Friday, the Taste of San Clemente! Foodies rejoice! The event goes from 6-10:30pm at the Rancho San Clemente Tennis Club, and includes food, wine, entertainment and dancing:

Friday night is also Astronomy Night at Rancho Sonado in Silverado Canyon! Grab the kiddos, strap on your boots and warm clothing, and head up for a sunset hike with an evening under the stars with constellation stories. Only $5/person! 6:30-8:30pm. Reservations required: (714) 708-3885

Another Friday night idea: the Irvine Holiday Faire at the Irvine Fine Arts Center. From 5-9pm, More than 150 artists will showcase unique, handmade items for purchase. Never to early to start your Christmas shopping! Event also includes live music and food. The Faire continues on Saturday:

Any chocolate lovers out there? I hope you're sitting down for this: On Friday night, the OC Chocolate Fest will be held from 5-9pm at Miles Square Park in Fountain Valley. Wowzers. Over 100 vendors of fine chocolates, wine tastings, and gifts:

Finally, on Saturday morning, you can attend a Composting Workshop from 10am-noon at the OC Great Park for FREE. Learn to recycle your greens to make a healthy substance for plants and soil:

There you have it, folks; plenty of fun things to do this weekend, and plenty of time to plan to do them! Let us know if you go to any of these events, and send us your pictures!

By the way, all of these events and many more are included in the November Events page in this month's issue of The OC Gazette. Be sure to check out the Events page every month for more great local events!

Tenley Molzahn at Mission Viejo Nordstrom

I had the pleasure of attending the Mission Viejo Nordstrom's Fall Fashion Show last Thursday night, where fresh looks for fall- including Holiday wear- were displayed for a group of eager fashion enthusiasts. An exciting element to the night was Tenley Molzahn of The Bachelor and The Bachelor Pad strutting her stuff down the runway as one of Nordstom's models for the night.

 [Tenley's look #1 - Click to enlarge]

[Holiday Party Wear - Click to enlarge]

I was able to chat with Tenley for a few minutes after the show- we talked about her man Kiptyn, her great jeans by Hollywood Million Denim, and local nonprofit Lily of the Valley Orphanage.

[Me & Tenley]

She's super nice, down to earth, and has a big heart for those in need. And guess what, guys?! Tenley agreed to an interview with OCG for the December issue! Stay tuned for that goodness!

Leave a comment with any questions you'd like us to ask Tenley for the article! :)

Pampered Chef Pampered Treatment

Today we had a lovely surprise at the office. Homemade Cupcakes. Delivered. With a side of flowers. Who's our suitor? Jamie Mead, our friendly neighborhood Pampered Chef rep and OC Gazette advertiser! Jamie is so sweet. She's also an amazing cook. Mainly because she's got all the right tools and kitchenware. It's her business. She sells Pampered Chef cookware and bakeware that make preparing meals easy, efficient, delicious and oh-so-pro looking. "Food is a common ground, a universal experience," says Jamie. I think we can all agree that some of the best heart-to-hearts, laughs, and bonding happen over meals with friends and family. And that's why Jamie is passionate about the products she sells. Meals shared together are becoming a long-lost tradition, sadly. Time and effort are scarce in people's schedules today. That's why Jamie is a champion for kitchen tools that can save time and effort and revive the long-lost shared-feast. "You can use Pampered Chef kitchen products to help find common ground in your kitchen again." A chef and a poet. Doesn't get better than that.
[Showcasing the delicious goods]

Jamie has a deal for the month of August through The OC Gazette:
Now you can get your favorite Pampered chef products without hosting a party. Just call Jamie at 949-697-4513 to redeem the coupon or receive a catalog. You can peruse the products on her website at www.PamperedChef.biz/JamieCooksForU.

Prepare to shake. TRMRS are coming.

Prepare to shake. TRMRS are coming. The 4 piece local Orange County surf band embodies surf rock at it’s grittiest and grungiest, with enough raw youth and guitar crackle to make you quake in involuntary head bobbing and general body hopping. I talked to band member Thommy Stewart about TRMRS upcoming live album recording, happening this Saturday, August 7th at Trashpretty Vintage in Laguna Beach (a diamond-in-the-rough vintage shop besides being an unofficial patron saint to local up-and-coming bands in OC).

“Our music has been categorized as slop-pop, surf thrash rock, or as Alex Knost put it, ‘Johnny Thunders slop-pop junky rock’,” says Tommy Stewart. The sound is a product of the bandmates' upbringing as generally-harmless rabble-rouser kids living in Orange County, filling their minds and hearts with plenty of surfing and the sounds of bands like the Germs, Black Lips, Minor Threat, Bad Brains and throwbacks like The Stones and The Animals.

“We’re inspired by a lot. 60’s rock’n’roll, mixed in with all of our own subculture and friends," Tommy tells me. "People like Brooks Nielsen, Matt Taylor, Al Knost, Robbie Kegle – just to name a few people I know that have hugely influenced Anthony and me."

The TRMRS have a simple dream: to make people move. To really shake things up. No static allowed. Just pure, undefiled energy. “The whole idea is that tremors are an involuntary shaking of the body,” explains Tommy. “So really, any rise or reaction we get from anybody hearing us is exactly what we want. I just think we’re all a bunch of wisecracks [laughs], which is why people enjoy our shows. We are all really energetic and provocative.”

You’ll get your chance to shake things out this Saturday at TRMRS’ live album recording in the parking garage of Trashpretty Vintage in Laguna Beach. “It’s a shop that has become an important part of the music and art community,” says Tommy. The cover charge will be $3. But bring extra! “Trashpretty has plenty of music cassettes, records, rad vintage clothes, sunglasses, jewelry, pins etc,” says Tommy.

Other bands on the bill (also represented by Burger Records) include the Cosmonauts (Tommy describes them as a spacey punky garage band influenced by Brian Jonestown Massacre), and Audacity from Fullerton, CA (Tommy dubs them as super punk garage pop).

One last question for Tommy: Best kept secret in OC?
“Wouldn’t be a secret if I told ya. Surfing sucks. Don’t do it, sharks will eat you.”

The Rundown:
What: TRMRS Live Album Recording
Where: Trashpretty Vintage in Laguna Beach (in the underground parking structure)
When: Sat, Aug 7th at 6pm
How much: $3 or a store purchase… or both.
More TRMRS shtuff here.

Jen

Susan Nethero: The Bra Whisperer

I've never seen The Horse Whisperer, but from what I hear, it's an inspiring film about a man who has a keen understanding of horses. If all this is true, then Susan Nethero has certainly earned her moniker, "the Bra Whisperer." Nethero trained under the Queen of England's royal bra fitter, and has helped over 100,00 women find the right bra size for their unique shape. She's been featured on Oprah, The Today Show, The Tyra Banks Show, and has made a host of other T.V. appearances.

[Susan at {intimacy} in South Coast Plaza]

Did you know that 85% of women are wearing the wrong bra size? I certainly didn't realize this until last week, when I was invited to meet Susan at the new {intimacy} boutique at South Coast Plaza and she told me this unfortunate percentage. 85%! I was there to receive a fitting (always complimentary at {intimacy}) and see if I might be among the unnecessarily uncomfortable majority.

I was a little worried about meeting Susan - anyone who's been on Oprah's show more than once is sort of other-worldly in my mind - but her smile and warm demeanor calmed my apprehension immediately. I was also nervous about baring all for our fitting, but Susan was professional, respectful, and put me at ease by standing behind me between bras. The purpose of my fitting - other than finding the right bra size for me - was to demonstrate the process that all of {intimacy}'s highly-trained (they attend "bra boot camp" before they're qualified!) fitters go through with each guest to the store.

Susan explained to me, once in our lavender and gold private fitting room, that they do not use tape measures at {intimacy}. No tape measures? This is revolutionary! She told me that rather than fitting me to a bra, they fit a bra to me. For this reason, {intimacy} carries over 90 sizes of bras, ranging in cup size from A through K. If you're like me, the existence of any sizes beyond D comes as a big surprise. What's more, the bandwidth sizes available go all the way up to 45! On the wall in my fitting room at {intimacy} was a plaque encouraging me that "Your body is perfect." {intimacy} aims to dispel the rumor that if you have bra issues, your body is the problem. Not so!

Back to my size: I was wearing the wrong one. I walked in wearing a 34B, and Susan fit me to a 32C. It seems that my whole life, I had fallen into one of the common bra fitting traps- going for comfort over proper fit. Susan told me that many women are wearing a bandwidth that is too large for their frame, and as a result, the bra band slips up in the back, creating back fat for many women and decreasing support in front.
"A bra is like a seesaw," Susan said, "When the back goes up, the front goes down."
When the bandwidth is snugger, the support is stronger. Susan also told me that the straps are not meant to be constantly fussed with. The straps should be adjusted initially to fit you proportionately. 90% of the support in a bra comes from the bandwidth, so it's of highest importance that you're wearing the correct size.

Did you know that the correct bra size can make you look 10-15 pounds slimmer? Susan showed me that the correct size will lift and shape your breasts and make you look taller, perkier, and thinner!
{intimacy} at South Coast Plaza recently opened their doors, becoming the first OC location (they have stores in Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Miami, and several others across the U.S.), and at this conveniently local spot you can receive a complimentary fitting to find your correct size (or, if you're of the wise 15%, to confirm it)! Fittings are always complimentary, and always thorough. {intimacy} offers an impressive selection of high-quality, European brand bras, such as Simone Perele, Chantelle, La Perla, Aubade, and Prima Donna. The boutique also carries everything else you could need before you put on your clothes - Spanx, Embrace, nighties, travel cases, and panties galore.

[Just like I said: Panties galore!]

 [The 'gold'-gilded bra bank/wall]

[Susan told me that she and I are new "breast friends"]

Quick and helpful list of the Top Ten Mistakes Women Make When Buying a Bra (provided by Susan herself):

1 - Baggy Back = Too Much Slack: The back band provides most of the support, so the fit should be firm yet comfortable. When the band is too loose, the back rises up, causing breasts to sag. This "see-saw" effect can also emphasize what every woman wants to hide: unsightly back fat.
2 - Resisting Revolution: As we age, things change. Thanks to weight loss and gain, nursing and hormonal changes, a bust line can change at least six times throughout a woman's life. Susan recommends getting fitted yearly.
3 - There is No Perfect Bra: Buying a new bra takes time. Don't just get the one your friend raves about- everyone's body is unique. To find the best fit, try on several styles.
4 - Don't Be a Softy: Most women find underwire bras to be uncomfortable, so they make the mistake of wearing a soft, non-underwire cup. The problem is that there's not enough support, especially for fuller-figured women. A properly fitted underwire bra should fit comfortably against your rib cage with a soft cotton casing. The result is superior support and comfort.
5 - The Big Bind: Minimizing bras actually bind and compress breast tissue, resulting in a loss of firmness. To appear taller, smaller-breasted and even pounds slimmer, voluptuous women should stick with bras that lift and center the bust line.
6 - Confusing Cups: Wearing the wrong cup size is a common mistake. The result is that breasts that spill over, or worse yet, breasts don't fill out the cups (resulting in wrinkles). Ideally, cup size should be proportional to the body frame.
7 - You Get What You Pay For: Department and speciality stores often carry low-quality, poorly made bras that fit badly. Higher quality brands, which offer more size options, are designed for real women's shapes.
8 - Self Service Slip Up: Don't sacrifice service, style, and comfort because you're embarrassed to ask for help when buying a bra.
9 - Compressed Breasts: Athletic women often rely on sports bras which compress rather than support A sports bra with seam, shape, and cup depth will prevent jiggling while jogging.
10 - Forever Free of Seams: While seamless bras are comfortable and look smooth under clothing, wearing them daily is a bad idea. Give your girls the support they need!

Happy fitting! :)

4 TO DOs ranging from “Classy” to “TMZ-Status Entertainment”

There are a lot of exciting “to dos” coming up. So tie a ribbon around your finger, or break out the post-it-note reminders on your bathroom mirror/iMac/fridge/or forehead. The following list of events is compiled in a hierarchy starting at  “classy and inspired”, and ending at “TMZ-Status Entertainment.” Choose your level.

CLASSY LIKE COCO
Lecture: Remembering Vintage Fashion
Wednesday July 14, 2010, at 1:30 PM… for FREE!

Fashion is one of the most interesting ear markers of social change. The Enlightenment spurred Europeans to can the powdered wigs, much like Kurt Cobain singlehandedly (overstatement) spurred a whole generation to ditch the shoulder pads for grungified flannel. Dig into the cultural movements behind fashion.
Suzanne Snyder, Docent, Bowers Museum, will present a beautiful selection of outfits, costumes and suits ranging from 1900 to the 1960s—such as flapper dresses, poodle skirts, Jackie O. pillbox hats and everything in between.

INSPIRED LIKE A ROBERT FROST POEM

Dead Poets Society
Directed by Peter Weir • (1989, USA, 129 minutes) • Rated PG
Tonight, July 8, 2010 • 7:00 pm at Lucille Kuehn Auditorium (Humanities Instructional Building, Room 100) (Building #610 on campus map).
Free snacks and group discussion afterwards.

Tonight UC Irvine’s Free Summer Film Series continues on their movie theme of “Teach and Resist (which makes me wonder where Dangerous Minds is?!). Tonight’s  showing is possibly the most inspiring teach-goes-off-the-reservation film: Dead Poets Society, in which John Keating takes his classes outside, gives his lectures from desktops (the wood ones, not the word-processing ones), tears apart the textbooks (every student’s dream), and spurs intellectual rebellion among his students. You’ll leave the movie wanting to get “Carpe Diem” tattooed on your bicep.

SELF-MADE AND SUAVE LIKE GATSBY
Block Party: an Indie Arts and Crafts Show
Saturday, July 10, 2010 from 11am-5pm at the Fiesta Marketplace (4th and N. Bush St. Santa Ana, Ca 92701).

The Handmade Brigade of Orange County, a cavalry of Etsy artists and crafty business folk with a heart for pumping all things local, are arranging another exciting indie arts and crafts show: Block Party. Expect to find live music, live art, food, over 50 independent designers and for the first 50 guests to arrive – free swag bags filled with handmade goodies. You'll feast your eyes on handmade screen-prints, swag, posters, art, stationary, jewelry and much more.
