Tuesday Nights at Forest Lanes

Forest Lanes in Lake Forest has a reputation for offering all sorts of fun- from their karaoke nights to beer pong nights to cosmic bowling to Friday nights with a live DJ. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, their Quartermania Special (after 8 pm) involves a $7 entrance fee and then each game is only 75 cents. Not only that, but pizza slices are 75 cents, and beer is $2.

Also, every Tuesday night, from 5pm to 9pm, various food trucks gather at the Forest Lanes parking lot.

"On the night I went the following trucks were present: Calbi, Seabirds, Crepes Bonaparte, Barcelona on the Go, Taco Dawg and a few others I can't remember off the top of my head," says Riche of Laguna Beach. "The great thing about this event are the short lines, the ability to bring your food into the bowling alley to dine on their tables (even in the bar where they have drink specials), the overall choice of various trucks and the fact that there's plenty of free parking."

Enjoy this veritible rolling food court while it lasts!

Also, visit this link to fill out a short form to receive two free bowling passes!

Forest Lanes is located at
22771 Centre Drive
Lake Forest 92630

Hit the slopes @ Big Bear!

With Thanksgiving approaching faster than a mob of door-busting deal-lovers on Black Friday, it's only a matter of time before the sound of Christmas music resounds from every store and radio station and sales of all items containing peppermint begin to peak. What this also means is that winter, glorious and fearful winter, is approaching (as close as it ever will, at least....you can't touch So. Cal, winter! You just can't!). While many Orange Countians have come to dread- or even hate- the ever-so-slightly colder weather (granted, the morning chill can be pretty fierce- I wear mittens in my car while I wait for my engine to warm up), some of us find it a welcome change from the curse of endless summer, and regard it as a very merry way of ringing in the holiday season.

I myself am a transplant (grew up in another state- I KNOW: shocking. "How is she qualified to work for the OC Gazette?!"). Scoff as you might, I like the cold. I grew up in Seattle, WA, which is a lot like OC, except swap the 10 months of sunshine thing with 10 months of gloom. Minor difference. I'm sure there are plenty of other transplants among the OCG readers, and even some pure-bred Californians who also like the cold this time of year. SO MUCH SO, in fact, that you head for the hills- er, mountains- to seize the cold in its finest form: snow.

Ah, snow. A beloved beast. A feared and revered friend. An awe-inspiring spectacle to Californians of all shapes and sizes (a great equalizer, in that way). The amazing thing about OC is this: drive less than an hour west and you'll hit the beach; drive less than two hours northeast-ish and you're in the snow-covered mountains at Big Bear! Skiing! Snowboarding! Inner tubing! Snow angels! Yellow snow! Er, scratch that last one. Cozy lodging and warming up by the fire with spiked egg nog!
I don't even particularly like egg nog and that still sounds great.

Now is the perfect time to plan a family (or romantic) jaunt out to Big Bear and revel in the glorious snow-laden holiday season. Big Bear Resort plans to begin lift operations tomorrow. Imagine: you could spend your Thanksgiving in the mountains! Or, skip out on the threat of imminent death-by-trampling and spend Black Friday and the following weekend burrowed away in cozy lodge dwellings! The hardest part will be deciding between hot beverages: hot apple cider, hot cocoa, or the aforementioned nog? Take a few of the Harry Potter books and you've got a recipe for AWESOMENESS.

Big Bear Mountain Resorts (Bear Mountain and Snow Summit) recently fired up its snow guns (unfortunately So. Cal clouds are infertile, as far as the snow-bearing business goes) to set the stage for the 2010/2011 season. Thanks to favorable weather conditions (nightly temps dropping into the 20s and low humidity), the crew at BBMR was able to make it snow for over 12 hours! Wish I could've been there to catch snowflakes with my tongue (cue music: "Snowflakes that fall on my nose and eyelashes...")!

Here are some quick looks at a few of this year's added and improved amenities:

Skill Builder Parks™ at Bear Mountain
Designed for beginning terrain park skiers and snowboarders, these areas offer snow features, rails, boxes and transitions to help guests test their skills and bring their skiing and riding to the next level in a comfortable, pressure-free environment. Each feature has a do-it-yourself instructional sign, offering a trick description and tips on getting started, polishing skills and even ski and snowboarding etiquette.

Senior Ticket Rate
–For the first time ever, BBMR is introducing a special Senior ticket rate for guests 62 and older, an average savings of 20 percent per ticket. For the full 2010-2011 ticket rate schedule visit www.bigbearmountainresorts.com.

Learning Center & Board Room Remodels Renting just got easier! Snow Summit has made improvements to its rental shop this season, so guests can spend less time in line and more time on the slopes. Bear Mountain has also remodeled its learning center and combined snowboard and ski rentals in one central location, this way families and friends who are enjoying the day together but may not necessarily all ski or all board can still rent their equipment in the same building.

Run Improvements & Snow making BBMR’s fanatical commitment to snow making and nearly unlimited supply of water from Big Bear Lake means guests can expect reliable quality snow conditions every day of the season, regardless of natural snowfall. Simply put, Big Bear Mountain Resorts offers more and better snow throughout the season than any other resort in Southern California.  New for 2010-2011, Bear Mountain has purchased two new "snowcats" for faster, better trail and park grooming. In addition, $500,000 in new fan guns have been added at Snow Summit and Bear Mountain.  With  expanded fan gun electrical distribution to several additional runs, both areas will be able to make more snow in a shorter period of time than ever before.

Daily Snow Reports Now you can enjoy daily snow reports in the palm of your hand! From your cell phone, text the word "SNOW" to 52406 to receive on-demand powder alerts and regular updates from Big Bear Mountain Resorts. Customize the messages you receive on bigbearmountainresorts.com. Standard data and text rates apply.

For up-to-the-minute snow reports, go to:
Snow Summit:  http://www.snowsummit.com/ski/snow-report/current-snow-report/

OK, I know: information overload. I'll stop while I'm [hopefully] ahead. But I hope I've successfully inspired you to seize the winter and head for the hills to revel in our own winter wonderland that is Big Bear! Remember to bundle up!

Tough Mudder Competition Review by OCG Writer Jordan Carver

by OCG writer/guest blogger Jordan Carver

It all started 7,500 ft above sea level: Thousands of adrenaline junkies all gathered together at the Bear Valley Mountain Resort for the most physically exerting day of many of our lives. The Tough Mudder competition occurs multiple times over the course of a year throughout the United States. The extreme mud run was created by British Special Forces to test the mettle of any man or woman who thinks they have what it takes to survive. The event is so difficult that it is called a challenge instead of a race; finishing this competition is a definite check off anyone’s bucket list. The course generally has around 18 obstacles including a 2,000 foot climb over a mile length, a submerged swim through 35 degree water, a mile-long log carry, and a mad dash through a wall of fire.

There were many times during the challenge that I thought I was going to collapse, but the camaraderie and teamwork of everyone running was enough to keep me on my feet. At any point, if a “mudder” began to struggle, another “mudder” was right there to get him/her back on their feet and through the next obstacle.
If any of you sports enthusiasts, health buffs, or gym rats are looking for a way to prove that you are at the pinnacle of fitness, than this challenge is definitely for you. There will be another ToughMudder race at Snow Valley in Southern California in May of 2011. Tickets are much cheaper if you buy them early, so head to www.toughmudder.com to sign-up; all profits go to the Wounded Warrior Project. If you really want a challenge, our very own Green Berets have a special challenge called the Goruck Challenge. In the Goruck Challenge, each participant wears a backpack with 25-lbs of bricks on their back and runs the course with (and at the same speed as) the Green Berets.

Sports Day at Craig Regional Park

 Are you a sports buff? Got one in your family? Maybe you're just looking for a chance to get your kids off the wii and into a "real" game? Well, this Sunday, October 10, OC Parks will present Sports Day at Craig Regional Park in Fullerton. Star players, teams, and coaches from different sports will come together for a fun-filled day of athletic activities where children and teens can learn athletic skills from the pros.

There will be stations to appeal to just about every kind of athlete: soccer, baseball, basketball, racquetball, sand volleyball, football, and softball. Former Angels pitcher David Frost, legendary USC running back Anthony Davis, the LA Galaxy Soccer Street Team, Cal State Fullerton women’s volleyball team, Hope International University’s softball team, and 3-time World Outdoor Singles Champion in racquetball, Rocky Carson, are just a few of the sports stars leading the activity camps.

Orange County Supervisor Shawn Nelson (Fourth District), head coach of the Fullerton Pop Warner Pee Wee Titans, will join the event to give tips and present the winners of each sports station with awards at the end of the day.

Sports Day is from noon to 4 pm, is free to the public and best suited for sporties aged 6 to 17. Parking is free for the day beginning at 11am. The first 1,000 attendees will receive a complimentary lunch and beverage. For those less athletically enthusiastic, additional activities will also be available, including kids craft stations and a bounce house.

Craig Regional Park is located at 3300 State College Blvd., in Fullerton, CA 92835.
For more info, call (714) 973-3180, or visit http://ocparks.com/craigpark/

Participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment. Limited equipment will also be available courtesy of OC Parks.

This Weekend in OC

Taste of Newport:

I promised you guys yesterday that I'd post more foodie events, and look! I've come through, haven't I? Over 30 restaurants, 15 wineries, live cooking demos, live entertainment and music at Fashion Island in Newport Beach. The festivities began today and continue through Sunday. Need I say more? Well, I will anyway: The Taste of Newport features some of the area's best restaurants. Food tastes range between $1 and $7. Entry tickets are $25 and get you access to the food, drink, and general hubbub. You'll then be given an "escrip" card to load with money to spend on food. This keeps things simple and cashless at the food booths. Any money leftover on your escrip card can be retrieved before you leave the event. Call (949) 729-4400 or visit the Taste of Newport website for more info.

Irvine Railroad's 5th Annual Pumpkin Patch (opens tomorrow!):

Here's a fun one for the whole family! Train rides, a haunted house, carnival games, a pumpkin patch, something called a "moon bounce," and more! Train rides start at 10am - click here for a 2 for 1 coupon for train rides, coupons for discounts on boat rentals, bike rentals, pumpkins, and more! Call (714)997-3968 or visit their website for more info.

Donavon Frankenreiter at the OC Great Park in Irvine:

Laguna Beach singer songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter will be playing at OC Great Park tomorrow night (Saturday) at 8pm.
"With a voice like a warm summer breeze, Frankenreiter has often been compared to his surfing musician friend Jack Johnson, which he doesn’t mind at all, though he stressed to one interviewer, 'We’re totally different people coming from the same place.' Born in Downey, Frankenreiter began surfing when he was growing up in San Clemente, where there’s also a long tradition of surfers getting together on the beach with their guitars and ukuleles. He continues to divide his time between the two, saying it keeps both fresh for him."
The show is free but parking is $10, so consider carpooling! Also, arrive early- there's a pre-concert stand up comedy lineup beginning at 7pm!Questions? Call: (949) 724-6247

SC Open Skate & Surf Contest:

This annual event will take place over two days this weekend. On Saturday, the 10th annual skate contest will take place at the Ralph's Skate Court on La Pata. On Sunday, visit the SC Pier for the 3rd annual Shortboard Surf Contest. The SC Open skate-surf contest promotes San Clemente's local boarders while raising funds for the Beaches, Parks & Recreation Foundation. Visit the SC City website for more info.

NFL Pepsi Punt, Pass, & Kick Competition:

Visit Marina Hills Park in Laguna Niguel on Sunday at 12pm for this free event where kids ages 6 to 15 can show off their football skills. Top finishers in each age/gender division will advance to the Sectional Competition. Register online, or just show up to watch the competition. Visit the NFL PPK site for more info.

Memphis at the Santora's Backyard BBQ:

You know, the one I blogged about yesterday? Well, click here to jog your memory. Or scroll down.
Keywords: Sunday, $10 BBQ plates, $3 beers, $4 sweet tea cocktails, and 4 DJs!

Mars & Stars Event at Irvine Regional Park:

Another one I blogged about earlier this week. Click here for the full post and all the deets.
Keywords: Saturday, NASA, Mars exploration, spacecraft, free after 5pm!

Ahi Extravaganza:

And, yet another good one I posted about several days ago.
Keywords for this one: Sunday, sushi, open bar access, dessert, surprise guests! Also, making a special appearance and signing autographs will be Chester Bennington from Linkin Park. The best part is, a generous portion of each ticket sold goes to Someone Cares.

Are you guys getting the point? The point is: THERE IS SO MUCH FUN STUFF HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND! Don't sit at home and twiddle your thumbs; get out and seize this awesomeness while you can! ;)

Have a great weekend Orange Countians! Let us know which event(s) you choose to go to! Send us your pics and we'll post 'em online!

Lakers 2010-11 Season: Overview

Get excited! The Lakers 2010-11 Schedule is here.

Another year of high-flying acrobatics from Shannon;

Another year of crazy antics and what-did-he-just-say tweets from ole' Ron Ron;

Another year of D-Fish buzzer beaters and clutch 3's;

Another year of terrifying sounds and faces out of Pau while he tears up the post with baby-faced Bynum;

Another year of Lamar "The Long Arm of The Law" Odom;

Another year with the KLOSER of all game closers, Kobe Bryant;

Another year with the game's greatest coach, Phil Jackson;

And hopefully another year that ends in June, not April, with the Lakers lifting the Larry O'Brien trophy proud and high with another Championship banner to hang in the Staples Center rafters.

-------------------------------

It's not just what Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak has been able to retain this season that we're excited about (hi-five Mitch), it's also the anticipation of a few new changes:

We said goodbye to the friendly giant from Congo, DJ Mbenga;

Professional bench warmer Adam Morisson and his don't-trust-this-guy-alone-with-your-kids 'stache are gone as well;

LA-native Jordan Farmar signed with the NJ Nets (I'll be looking for cameos on Jersey Shore) and corn-row-sporting Josh Powell is off to Atlanta too;

We gladly said hello to our former tattooed rival Matt Barnes who will proudly wear the purple and gold (Picture above: remember this moment?);

Veterans Theo Ratliff and Steve Blake have also inked their names on the dotted line, further strengthening the Lakers bench;

Draft picks Derrick Caracter and Devin Ebanks will also get a chance to show us what they're made of;

 And hopefully the resetting of my favorite Slovenian, Sasha Vujacic, back to his 2009-10 glory days that we saw a glimpse of at the end of the NBA Finals last year.

It's going to be a great season. Check out the 2010-11 Schedule and start planning accordingly! (Sorry Granny, Christmas presents with the family will have to be delayed until after we watch Kobe and the Lake Show take on The Three Musketeers of Miami.) It even includes a preseason stop in Orange County at the Honda Center to take on the Utah Jazz.

Weezer Free Show Orange County

[90's Alternative Rock Darlings, Weezer.]

There are certain things that are universally loved. Puppy dogs, flowers, chocolate, Adam Sandler in the Happy Gilmore era, Justin Bieber - OK maybe not Justin, but you get my point. Among this list of you're-crazy-if-you-don't-like-them things is, no argument, the great American band Weezer

Many of you may still be mourning over missing Weezer because of the "Winter Tour Bus Incident of 2009" that left nerdy-cool frontman Rivers Cuomo with a couple fractured ribs which cause the group to cancel their remaining December tour dates (which included their Irvine appointment). Well dry those wet and weary eyes and cheer up, because Weezer is coming back to Orange County. And it's FREE this time! On August 7th, at 4:30 Weezer will step onto the golden sands of Huntington Beach to wow and entertain over 500,000 spectators at the Hurley US Open of Surfing

[Cold War Kids - Photo by Matt Wignall]

This year's US Open of Surfing will be the Hanukkah of music, except instead of 8 days of gifts there will be 5 days of free shows. And it's not 5 days of free shows featuring yesterdays' greatest one-hit wonders (shout out to you Eifel 65, Lou Bega, Smashmouth, Edwin McCain, and Blind Melon), it's 5 days of free shows featuring all the bands you would pay to see: Cold War Kids (local OC boys - see our interview with them here), Switchfoot, Hot Hot Heat, The Soft Pack, Bedouin Soundclash, Iration, Timmy Curran, Cobra Starship, and Street Drum Corps. For Free. Thanks Hurley/Nike/Converse. You guys are the best.

[The crowds at US Open of Surfing.]

US Open of Surfing Concert Schedule:

Tuesday, August 3,  4:30 – 6:30 p.m. Cold War Kids preceded by The Soft Pack
Wednesday August 4, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. Bedouin Soundclash preceded by Iration
Thursday August 5,  4:30 – 6:30 p.m. Switchfoot preceded by Timmy Curran
Friday, August 6,  4:30 – 6:30 p.m. Cobra Starship preceded by Street Drum Corps
