Peter Pan at OCPAC

You've seen the cartoon movie, probably even a live action version; You've likely seen a theatrical production, maybe put on by a high school drama team; but you've never seen Peter Pan like this. In threesixty°'s production of J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan at OCPAC, you'll feel as if you're truly part of the adventure. The action of the play takes place on a round stage in the center of the audience, in a large cricus-like tent, hearkening back to Shakespearean-Globe Theatre days. As it hearkens back, it simultaneously hearkens forward to a virtual reality of sorts, as the top half of the tent is used to project a vivid moving picture and changing backdrop for the action of the play.

This photo might look like a psychedelic blur - or the all-seeing eye of Sauron - at first glance, but look closer and you'll discover that this scene from threesixty°'s Peter Pan takes place in the woods, at the headquarters/hide out of "the lost boys." The projections provide a truly 360° experience that moves and changes as the characters continue their adventure. The most breathtaking moment of this experience comes whenever the characters fly; you'll feel like you're flying alongside them as you soar above London, dodging buildings and navigating through archways on the way to Neverland (Sidenote: applause and audible "oohs" and "ahhs" from the audience are to be expected, and even partaken in).

[Flight to Neverland (c) Kevin Berne]

"To live would be a very big adventure," Peter Pan (Nate Fallows) says before beginning to cry.  This was perhaps my most favorite moment of the play - though the flight to Neverland was a very, very close second. The emotional weight of this line still hits me. For all his fun, adventuring, and refusal to grow up, young Peter - even if only for an instant - realizes his loneliness, and longs for the one thing he is most afraid of: growing up. Barrie perhaps intended for readers/viewers/listeners of the tale to then understand that there is beauty in maturity, and even beauty in that which we fear. For this reason and much more, the line which was delivered so flawlessly by Fallows hit me deeply.

After the show ended, I felt a bit of a loss for words (something that doesn't happen often for this writer). Not only that, but I felt a bit daunted by the task I knew that laid ahead of me: writing this review.  I asked myself, "Are there words to describe this production?" The resulting answer from myself to myself resembled something like a hen plucking at a surplus of corn scattered before her, or a miner picking away at a ginormous gem in a stubborn rocky cavern; single words came to mind, one at a time: awe-inspiring. Breathtaking. Captivating. Beyond our time (ok, that's more than a single word at a time, but it did come to mind). This presentation tells a classic story in a way that is new, beautiful, and wildly vivid. I hope you make it a priority to see threesixty°'s Peter Pan at OCPAC while you can - just expect to be swept away and carried off to a familiar and magical place.

Wooson K. Chang Coming to OC

If it's true that classical music makes you smarter, then my morning commute spent listening to Classical KUSC is like an early morning class. At the very least, it calms any potential road rage and puts me in an overall good mood. Sometimes I'll flip on the station and find that it's operatic music, and I'm not sure I can explain the mood this puts me in. There's something that's at once calming and inspiring about opera; the beauty and range of the human voice- whether or not you understand the words communicated- touches me on a deep, emotional level. I can remember radio opera music bringing me to tears more than once.
When I found out that International Soprano Woosoon K. Chang will be performing at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Irvine on Friday, October 15th, I made a mental note to pack Kleenex. With her most recent performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Ms. Chang hopes to bring her remarkable voice and talents to the local community and to make classical music more accessible to the younger crowd. With this in mind, the ticket price is only $5.00!

Spend Friday evening with Mozart, Puccini, and Verdi! If you're unfamiliar with the music, don't worry! Woosoon will draw you into the captivating world of opera and melt your heart with the emotion she brings to the score.

When: October 15th, 2010 at 7pm
Where: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Irvine
Tickets: $5.00 (can be purchased at the door)

Project Bandaloop! (Again!)

(Again)

I drove up to Costa Mesa last night with a few friends to see Project Bandaloop; we went early, staked out a spot in front of Segerstrom Hall at OCPAC, spread a blanket, then hit up Hans' Ice Cream (we're those people who save a spot and then leave for an hour....sorry). By the way, if you haven't been to Hans', go. It is so delicious! And you know we love locally owned stops around here- when I went last night Hans himself was working and serving us our treats! I recommend the mint chip "munchie" (chocolate covered mint chip ice cream pop) and the chocolate peanut butter cookie dough (that's chocolate ice cream with chunks of peanut butter cookie cookie dough)! Wow, still drooling.

Anyway, we got back to our spot about an hour before show time, and the place was already bustling. Glad to see you love free stuff, OC! The show started right on time, and it was awesome! Many people in the crowd - myself included - laid back on their blankets and gazed up at the wall-scaling acrobats. There was even a suspended trombonist! Pictures to prove:

As with most magical experiences, pictures truly cannot do justice. Lucky for you, if you missed last night, you can still go tonight or tomorrow night at 8:30pm to see Project Bandaloop in action! Two thumbs up from this blogger.

I strongly recommend going at least an hour early to claim your spot! Why not bring a picnic? My friends and I were a bit jealous to see how many people brought wine and/or beer to the show- wish I'd thought of that!

A Weekend For Kids in OC

JFK said, “Children are the world's most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.” This weekend you can do your American, and familial, duty to cultivate these precious "resources" and expose them to some really fun and intellectual local events.

Sat 2nd, 10am - 6pm @ Bill Barber Park, Irvine
Bring the world to your children's fingertips at Orange County's LARGEST multicultural festival! The festival represents 50 countries and entertains over 13,000 guests who come to enjoy the food, music, and entertainment. The festival is kid and family friendly offering hands-on art projects, games, puppet shows, and activities in a giant, interactive Kids Village.

Sun 3rd, 10am - 4pm @ Corona del Mar State Beach
Let your kids exercise their artistic skills by taking them down to Corona del Mar to take part in this Orange County tradition. Whether they're building a sandcastle hands on, or practicing their artistic critiquing skills, it's bound to be a good time for everyone! Did I mention there will be cash prizes? The perfect segway to give your kids a little lesson on how hard work pays off - or for the losing parties, the value of good sportsmanship! Sign up forms are on the website. You can turn them in on the day of the contest starting at 9am.

Sun 3rd, 11am @ Wild Rivers Waterpark, Irvine.
This needs little explanation to spark excitement: 15,000 rubber duckies floating down a lazy river in a race to the finish while you're cheering on your duck from the Nairobi Express water slide. That's right, participation in the Rubber Ducky Derby gets you into the waterpark for free! Purchase one duck for only $10 and you get a day free. You can't beat that. PLUS it's for a good cause. Every duck purchased raises money for the Children's Bureau's child abuse prevention programs. As if this weren't enough incentive to attend, the event also includes prizes, including a 2011 Nissan Versa and a chance to win a MILLION DOLLARS!
